As Arjun had mentioned in the previous post about using Master.com for your search, one way to add search is to use the Google “site:” operator, for example, executing a search in Google as “nightscape site:www.pbase.com/arjunrc” . The problem with this approach is that Google “site:” does not work well since /arjunrc is a subdirectory and not a sub domain - Google “site:” does not filter directories. Quite by chance recently, I stumbled upon the following site... http://www.google.com/services/free.html Using this it seems possible to add a search to your site using Google with a few modifications. Ofcourse there are advantages and disadvantages to using Google over Master.com and I will list them at the end. First go to the above site. You will see the following. {{howto:googlesearch1.gif}} Click on Customize Google for your site. Now your setup begins. ====== STEP 1. Select Domain ====== Select the first option as shown below, and enter www.pbase.com as the domain. As this point, Google does not accept a subdirectory so you can't enter www.pbase.com/yardbird. {{howto:googlesearch2.gif}} ====== STEP 2. CSS setup ====== At this step you can customize the results page to match your CSS in pbase. Copy the values for background color, etc from your css. Again leave the domain as www.pbase.com {{howto:googlesearch3.gif}} ====== STEP 3. Personal details ====== At this step, you need to select an email, password etc. The URL of your website does not affect the search code in any way so go ahead enter what you wish. {{howto:googlesearch4.gif}} ====== STEP 4. Generated Code ====== This is the step that the code is generated as shown below. This is how far Google will get you. {{howto:googlesearch5gif.gif}} ====== STEP 5. Modify Code to suit your site ====== This is where you modify the code. The easiest way is to search the code for www.pbase.com and change it to www.pbase.com/YOUR_GALLERY_NAME, so mine looks like www.pbase.com/yardbird. You can also change the phrase "Google Search" to "Search my site" or something to that extent. ====== STEP 6. Cut and Paste code into pbase ====== Copy the code and paste it into your description in the edit page. You should be good to go. You can see it in my site http://www.pbase.com/yardbird Ok, now the advantages and disadvantages. It's simple really, Master provides you with daily statistics, not too detailed but it's there. Google doesn't have any statistics. Not yet. But Google is Google, the master of Search. Sorry for the pun. Also Google takes a while to index all your photos, maybe even a month but I am able to find most of my photos. With master.com you have more control of the frequency of index, though the free signup only indexes 5000 pages or so. If there are any problems while setting it up, feel free to add your comments at the [[http://forum.pbase.com/viewtopic.php?t=18303|related forum thread]].
